      Hello,
I have a leylandi hedge (37 shrubs that are about 5 m tall, planted at a distance of 90 cm) and they have started to dry out on the inside. So far I have done the following:
      – treatment 1: sprayed with Bordeaux mixture and vermitec
      – treatment 2: sprayed with coppermax and nissorun
      – treatment 3: sprayed with champ and nissorun
      – treatment 4: sprayed with coppermax and nissorun
      – I contacted a “specialist” and he told me that it’s normal for them to dry on the inside due to the lack of light as well as because I treat them too often.

The treatments were recommended to me by a worker from the phytopharmacy. I was also advised to spray them every 2 weeks until autumn. If I have to treat them so often I am determined to give up them!

So far I have not noticed the disease stopping.
      Other details:
      – there are no leaks on the trunk of the plants
      – when I touch the dry branches they break off easily

Right now I don’t know what to do … I am even considering replacing them with other plants suitable for hedges. I planted leylandii because I have been told that they are very hardy, but they seem to be very sensitive. In my yard I also have two silver thuja shrubs and they show no signs of disease.

Please give me some advice on what to do with the hedge … I would appreciate including a contact of an agronomist who would like to come to my place to assess the trees and tell me what to do (for a fee, obviously)

Hello. Overall, the appearance of the conifers is normal, common. Indeed, it is well known that the slight wilting inside the crown and at its base is a normal phenomenon in conifers, which occurs with age, i.e. with the growth and thickening of the crown and, therefore, the reduction of light penetration inside/at its base. In this case, it is possible that the phenomenon has been accentuated by a combination of abiotic factors, such as high and/or constant moisture in the soil, occasional dampness at foliage level (if applicable), the lack of fertilizing and others, depending on the case.
In view of the treatments carried out, it is recommended to remove the damaged parts of the plant for the time being and to ensure the optimal growing conditions for the plants (Cypress, planting guide and care work). As the activity and spread of plant pathogens is stimulated by the high and constant humidity of the soil, watering is recommended to be carried out only at the roots, depending on the recorded temperatures and rainfall, only when the soil is dry on the surface (preferably in the morning or evening, when the temperatures are lower). Spraying conifers with water is not recommended, as humidity at the foliage level is also a favorable environment for the development and spread of fungal diseases.
Moreover, in order to stimulate a healthy and vigorous growth, it is recommended to ensure the optimal nutrient requirements by administering specific fertilizers: at the roots (e.g. Tree Shrubs, 1 litre or AMN Nordalge, 500 ml) and on the leaves (e.g. Evergreen Fluid, 350 ml or Fir Fluid, 350 ml). During the growing season a root and foliar fertilizer can be applied regularly, following the recommendations in the description of the chosen products.
It is further recommended to monitor the evolution of the conifers, and if you notice any symptoms of deterioration, please send us a message accompanied by photos (e.g. holes, sap leaks with sawdust, spots, delimited discolorations, deposits, pests, growths).
