Verstappen equals win record with US GP victory

Max Verstappen fought back to pass Lewis Hamilton to win a dramatic United States Grand Prix and equal the record for victories in a season.
Verstappen was controlling the race until a delay at his final pit stop handed the lead to Hamilton and also dropped the Red Bull driver behind Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.
The pit problem gave Hamilton a chance to end his and Mercedes' win drought in a difficult season for the team.
But the pace of the new world champion was just too much, and Verstappen caught and passed Hamilton with six laps to go, the seven-time champion defenceless against the formidable straight-line speed of the Red Bull.
Verstappen's 13th win this year equals the record for wins in a season, held by Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel, and was sufficient for Red Bull to clinch the constructors' title for the first time since 2013, securing a double after Verstappen clinched the drivers' title last time out in Japan.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc finished third from 12th on the grid, helped by the two safety car periods that punctuated the middle of the race, ahead of Red Bull's Sergio Perez and Mercedes' George Russell.

Max Verstappen's victory handed Red Bull their first constructors' title in nine years with his win in Austin but below the world champion...
Charles Leclerc has jumped back above Sergio Perez in the hunt to finish second in the drivers' standings. The Ferrari man is two points clear of the Red Bull driver after finishing on the podium today.
Lewis Hamilton has gained ground on fifth-placed Carlos Sainz thanks to finishing second. The Spaniard, meanwhile, sees George Russell pull way from him in that fourth-place battle after two tangled on track at the start of the race.

'It would be nice to have a win' - Wolff
Bit more from Toto Wolff, speaking to Sky Sports a few moments ago.
On George Russell and Lewis Hamilton's relationship: "What I see is a respectful and constructive relationship. There is a real active exchange. That is good for us.
On the last few races this year: "We will try to get the max out of the car, it would be nice to have a win. If not, if we can race closer that is enough.
On the cost cap issue: "We are fighting on and off track, it is not always making friends. Dietrich Mateschitz dying yesterday, he was a big loss and I think the cost cap discussion should be parked for the time."
'We are much closer now, we were racing for a win' - Wolff
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff talking to Sky Sports: "We are much closer now, we were racing for a win. On the second run, on the hard we were the fastest car probably with Max.
On the development of the car: "I think we understand more now what we got wrong with thecar. We can almost trace it back to the decision last October. We thought we could runthe car on the deck but we can't. we're making small little hamster steps.
On the race: "The pace was two tenths off, but this was exactly what was missingin the end. Credit to Red Bull. Max was really strong. Winning the constructor's iswhat they deserve.
On getting the car ready for next year: "We have a certain advantage with the wind tunnel time. We have 14% morewind tunnel time than Red Bull and that should reel them in a bit. We can only quantifyin terms of our development."
Welcome to the gang
Max Verstappen joins the exclusive club of achieving 13 race wins in a single season, along with seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher and four-time title winner Sebastian Vettel.
'We never lost hope, we never stopped fighting and believing in ourselves'- Horner
Horner added: "I'm just so happy he got to see Max retain the drivers in Japan, the Constructors has been such a big one as well because eight years and we were out of it for a few of them but we never lost hope, we never stopped fighting and believing in ourselves so to do this is estimate to every man and women in the company.
"It means even more because we've had the tough years, we've had to keep picking ourselves up, dusting ourselves, coming back, and we've done that so the hard work and the blood, sweat and tears that have gone into this, this one just means the world to us."
On Red Bull's future, he said: "His (Dietrich's) legacy lives on, he empowered us to go and make an engine for the future, he was looking into the future. Whilst he's not here in person, he's here in spirit and his spirit and the Red Bull's spirit and legacy will live on."
'This means everything to us it’s been such a journey'- Horner
Red Bull’s Christian Horner said post-race: “To win the Constructorschampionship after eight years is incredible. Everybody has got to play theirpart in the team and fortunately there are going to be bad days and there wasan issue with the gun itself. The good thing is it kept the car covered and Max,wow.
“There’s a hunger within him that I’ve never seen in anotherdriver. There’s a determination and as he’s growing and maturing, he’s readingraces incredibly well.
“I think this means everything to us it’s been such a journey, Dietrichwas a very private man, he was passionate, passionate about sport, especially aboutFormula 1. He had a dream to have a Formula 1 team, he did that he had two, hegave us all an opportunity, he believed in us, he backed us and this is forhim. We are tremendously grateful for everything he’s done, for us as individualsand as a team and we are going to celebrate in his honour tonight.
"He’s a reclusive guy but when he turned up he would bestraight in the garage. As a matter as getting everyone together because we area team and that’s what gives us the strength and the ability to achieve what wehave.”

'We need to keep working in order to challenge them'- Leclerc
Charles Leclerc finished in third said afterwards: “Yeahsatisfied in a way because we started P12 and a podium is an achievement. Lookingat the race it’s obviously a bit disappointing we had the pace but we had toomuch deg at the end of the race and we will work but P3 starting from P12 isnot that bad.
On it being one of the tougher races, he added: “Yeah it is especially in the first sector with so much Gforces and the tyre deg. It was quite a nice battle with Checo and later onwith Max but we need to keep working in order to challenge them.”
'It felt amazing to be in the lead'
Lewis Hamilton who finished second at the US Grand Prix: "Firstly a huge thank you to the crowd. We've had such an amazingcrowd. This is the biggest crowd we've had here in the whole time we've been here. Big big thank you.
"Secondly, a big shout out to my team, we came here with upgrades, we closedthe gap a little bit. We were so so close. I did everything I could to stay ahead, they were just a little quicker. Greatstrategy, great race by Red Bull and my condolences to the team.
"I'm shattered. The car was a handful today. It felt amazing tobe in the lead. That’s something we have worked so hard on as a team through the year. I had so much hope. We will keep pushing, we’ll try to give it everything we canin the next three. It will come to us at some stage."
'This one is definitely dedicated to Dietrich himself'- Verstappen
Max Verstappen, who earns his 13th win of the season in the RedBull, said: “It was a tough one, it was all looking good but then the pit stopwas a bit longer than we would have liked, I had to find my way forward again, but we gave it everything out there today. Of course, it’s a very difficultweekend for us and this one is definitely dedicated to Dietrich himself for what he has done for everyone.
“We had a big chance to win the Constructorshere and of course you want to do that in style and I think we did that today.
“It definitely means a lot to me,to the team, because he (Dietrich) was so instrumental to the whole team, it will allcontinue but we of course wanted to have a good result today.”
