Red Bull's Max Verstappen survived a late-race assault from title rival Charles Leclerc's Ferrari to win the inaugural Miami Grand Prix.

Verstappen was cruising to an easy win after passing Leclerc early on but a late safety car brought them together for a re-start with 10 laps to go.

Leclerc strained everything for five laps to get close enough to pass but Verstappen broke his challenge.

Verstappen's win cut Leclerc's championship lead to 19 points.

It was an unexpectedly dramatic finish to a race that had appeared to be petering out after Verstappen's early climb from third on the grid to the lead.

  3. Post update

Only six points separates Ferrari and Red Bull at the top of the constructors' championship now.

  4. 'We have a fast race car in there, we don't have the key to unlock it.'

George Russell who finished fifth: "It was mixed feelings, based on yesterday it was a good result. We have a fast race car in there, we don't have the key to unlock it. There's more to do.

"Its frustrating but I'm sure we'll get there at some point.

"Its good, when you battle with your team mate you show m ore respect, give more space. I enjoyed it. I think there's good respect between us. I was pushing as hard as I could.

"I didn't really like the tarmac, what did I like? I liked that we were in Miami."

  5. 'We're third quickest'

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, to Sky Sports: "George stayed out a long time and we were betting on a safety car and that realised but it went against Lewis who lost a position.

"It's just a bit down. We're third quickest. This is where we are. We're not as quick in qualifying and we are behind the Red Bulls and Ferrari."

  6. 'Its been a great event and a great race in the end."

Red Bull boss, Christian Horner on Sky Sports: "We gave everything we had at it. After safety car we're lucky Ferrari didn't pit and take on new tyres. It neutralised things. Charles in DRS we couldn't shake him off and Max kept it clean, didn't make any mistakes. It took about 5, 6 laps to break DRS and he was able to manage it from there.

"In the early laps Max was hanging and looking after the tyres. that was always our tactic look after the right tyre the right front and keep Charles under pressure. A real tactical race.

"That DRS is so powerful they could close in in the first section and we couldn't drop them, eating away a tenth a tenth a tenth. Max was able to break DRS and build a lead.

"If you look a the wings of the car we ran a very low downforce set up for here, it seems to work on our car. it payed off today. Of course, reliability will be an issue. Checo lost half a second a lap. without that he might have even been second.

"We've got some interesting races coming up. Cars are running well, we've got development coming in the summer that will help as well.

"It been insane. I've never known such interest such passion in a huge huge event. Its been a great event and a great race in the end."

  7. 'We're rising and improving'

Williams' Alexander Albon, who dyed his hair red recently, finished 10th and told Sky Sports: "You just need to dye your hair, that's all. We've had the pace all weekend we wanted to be in the top 10 and were frustrated at [starting] P18.

"Our pace was good, we benefitted from collisions in front but we were catching the cars so I'm happy. It was really physical, on a par with Singapore, we're pushing flat out.

"I wouldn't say I feel reborn, I just feel I'm doing a better job than a couple of years ago. I have a team around me that I feel a lot of support from, we're rising and improving.

"Before the weekend started we said if I get in the points the whole team would dye their hair red."

  8. 'We'll take it and move on.'

Lewis Hamilton, who finished sixth: "The car defiantly didn't feel the same as it did, I'm sure they'll check it it was quite a hard hit but otherwise it will be ok. We've got good points as a team today. We'll take it and move on.

"In that scenario I have no clue where everyone is, that's what you rely on the guys for. its just been a bit unfortunate with the safety car. I'm excited to take a step forward, which we haven't done yet."

  9. Post update

Alex Albon tells Sky Sports that if he scored points in Miami, the Williams team said they would dye their hair red to match the 26-year-old.

We'll see what they all rock up with in Spain.

  10. Get Involved

Joe Owen: Just a rebadged version of Sochi. Terrible race. More importantly a race that wasn't needed.

Rob: Already red bull winning development race. At one point 18 seconds between 1st and 4th. Dull race and think the season will sadly be Red Bull domination.

Ditchyditch: New circuit same old story.

  11. 'We got what we deserved'

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, who finished third, says: "Nice and warm. I've been better. After the crash on Friday I still had a bit of neck pain going into the race and had to fight through it and we managed to get a decent result.

"It wasn't easy at all, it has been a tough race with the heat and the car was sliding but in the end we got what we deserved, P3, and can build on that. I want more, but it's not bad."

  12. 'We need to keep pushing, every race will be important'

Charles Leclerc, who finished second: "It was a very difficult race physically.

"We struggled quite a bit with the medium tyres. It made the race a bit difficult from that moment onwards. On the hards we were more competitive. Towards the end I thought I could get Max at one point.

"Today Red Bull had the advantage in terms of pace, but it was fun. It's amazing to see so many people and great to have so many Ferrari fans in the grand stands.

"We need to keep pushing, every race will be important throughout the year."

  13. 'An incredible Sunday'

Race winner Max Verstappen: "It was an incredible grand prix, very physical, but we kept it exciting until the end.

"I'm incredibly happy winning in Miami. It was an incredible Sunday for us."
