Red Cross desperately in need of blood donations, giving out gift cards (2024)

The Red Cross is asking for blood and platelet donations. The nonprofit is warning of a steep shortfall in donations. It needs all blood types, especially type O.

Anyone who donates blood or platelets through June 30 will get a $15 gift card to a merchant of their choice.

"Record-breaking summer travel and severe weather conditions are expected to persist all season long, which may prevent donors from being able to give. When fewer people donate, less blood is available for hospital patients," the Red Cross said in a news release. "Make a blood or platelet donation a priority this summer."

Here's a look at upcoming donation opportunities in Northwest Indiana:

•12-5 p.m. June 14, Hammond Sportsplex, 6630 Indianapolis Blvd., Hammond

•12-5 p.m. June 14, First United Methodist Church of Portage, 2637 McCool Road, Portage
